Tubal Ligations

This procedure is a method of birth control that is meant to be permanent and non reversible. The procedure will block both fallopian tubes so an ovum may not get fertilized. Although this procedure is meant to be permanent and non-reversible, the national failure rate is 18-20/1000 cases. Forms of permanent sterilization do not protect against sexually transmitted diseases. Barrier contraception is always recommended with sexual activity.

A tubal ligation can be completed both in an open surgical technique, at time of cesarean section, or a laparoscopic technique, with small incisions . Both procedures are performed in a hospital setting with a general anesthetic, the laparoscopic approach is an outpatient procedure, patients go home the same day.

This procedure is reserved for patients that are sure that they do not wish any more children. There are many reversible forms of birth control available and your physician will be happy to discuss them with you at any appointment.
