A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus - a common procedure that can significantly improve quality of life and even save the lives of some women. While it is a major operation, the risks are among the lowest of any major surgery, and healthy women generally recover without serious problems.
There are various types of hysterectomies, some require an abdominal incision and others can be completed either vaginally or with a laparoscopic assisted vaginal approach. All of the techniques will be discussed with you by your physician after your case has been completely reviewed and a specific care plan both medical and or surgical, if indicated, will be explained in detail.
When hysterectomies are completed, regardless of route, patients may elect to preserve their ovaries. By leaving ovarian function intact, patients will not experience mood changes, hot flashes, weight changes or decrease in sex drive.
