Conization of Cervix

Conization or cone biopsy, is a procedure where the doctor removes a cone-shaped tissue sample. This allows the pathologist to see whether any abnormal cells have invaded tissue beneath the surface of the cervix. Conization also may be used as treatment for a precancerous lesion if the entire abnormal area can be removed. This procedure requires either local or general anesthesia and may be done in the doctor's office or in the hospital.
