Bartholin Cyst Treatment/Excision

A Bartholin gland cyst is a saclike structure usually filled with fluid that forms in the Bartholin gland. The glands are located in a woman's external genital area, or vulva. They are found in the skin folds (labia) that cover the vaginal opening. The glands are normally the size of a pea and provide a small amount of fluid to the vulva area.

More than one cyst may be present. Bartholin gland cysts may range in size from a small marble to a golf ball size, and they grow slowly.

Treatment for this condition depends on the size of the cyst, whether it is painful, and whether the cyst is infected.

If the cyst is not infected, treatment options include:

  • watchful waiting by the woman and her health care professional
  • soaking of the genital area with warm towel compresses
  • soaking of the genital area in a sitz bath
  • use of non-prescription pain medication to relieve mild discomfort
